File sent to DPP over Coole death

Early last Friday morning, a woman was brought in for questioning to Mullingar Garda Station in relation to the suspected murder of Brian McGrath, who went missing in the Coole area back in 1987, but was released without charge later that evening.A spokesperson for the Garda Press Office said a file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions and investigation into the case is continuing.Human remains were discovered in a field in Coole in November 1993 following new information received by Gardaí, and were believed to be those of Brian McGrath who had gone missing six years previously. It is believed that the remains showed signs that the body had been torched before it was buried, and consequently when it was first discovered, the body was unidentifiable. A number of people were questioned in relation to the act at the time but no prosecution was ever taken.Last May, the Garda Cold Case unit reviewed the case due to advances in investigative technologies, and an exhumation of the body followed. The new forensic tests, such as DNA, led detectives to strongly believe that the body was that of Brian McGrath.
