Mullingar Sewage Scheme access restrictions

Due to ongoing improvement work on the Mullingar Sewerage Scheme, Westmeath County Council is to close the pedestrian underpass linking Springfield and Friars Mill from February 2.Issuing a statement this week, the council said: 'As part of the works for the construction of the Mullingar Sewerage Improvement Scheme, it has become necessary to close off all pedestrian access in the area around the existing pedestrian underpass at Springfield linking onto Friars Mill, Mullingar. This closure will be effective from the Monday February 2.'It also means that pedestrian access along the Royal Canal Tow-paths, along the Canal, are also closed from January 19. This closure will allow for the construction of pipelines for the Mullingar Sewerage Interceptor Scheme and will result in a new upgraded pedestrian underpass being provided. This work will also facilitate the proposed construction involving the new pedestrian underpass as well as the construction of a new culvert to allow for the diversion of the River Brosna. The works will have implications for the residents of Springfield Gardens, Springfield Cottages and Ginnell Terrace as well as for residents of Friars Mill Court who use the pedestrian underpass on a regular basis.Until the construction works are completed, all pedestrians are being asked to use the existing footpaths running along the public road, using the existing road bridge at the Delvin Road/Old Dublin Road junction as the means to cross the Canal. The works will take approximately ten weeks to complete. Westmeath County Council said they regret any inconvenience caused and are asking for the public"s co-operation for the duration of the construction period.
