Wobbles and toddles going from strength to strength

The Wibble Wobble Toddler Club which is held at Kilbeggan Pitch and Putt every Wednesday morning is welcoming new mums for the New Year.Since the group was established by Grace Mullins who lives next door to the club in April 2007 it has gone from strength to strength with 25 members currently on the books. Each week about 10 mums and their toddlers and babies arrive at the club house at 10am for a welcome opportunity for a coffee and a chat with that all important thing when you are a stay at home mother- adult company. For two hours the mums get to chat while the kids play and for most of the members, who are not from Kilbeggan, it has been a life-line.'You can come for a cup of coffee and people understand that kids make noise which is not always the case in restaurants,' said Bernie Egan who is originally from Carlow.'I would say that most of the people who come to the club are not originally from Kilbeggan and so its a great opportunity to get out and meet people. There"s loads of space for the kids to run around and its a safe environment for them to play in as well.'Catherine McIntyre who brings her four-year-old son Brian to the club has had the chance to meet her neighbours by coming to the group.'I am only from Rhode and now live in between Kilbeggan and Tyrrellspass but I didn"t know half of the people in the area until I started coming here but sometimes you just don"t get the chance to say hello and introduce yourself.'This is a lovely way to do it and it"s a great place for Brian to come along and play.'The club would like to express its sincere thanks to the Kilbeggan Pitch and Putt committee for its continued support and would also like to thank all the staff at the SWEETS office in Kilbeggan. For more information on the club contact Grace on 0877860902.Triple gold for JimKilbeggan athlete Jim Langan hit top form on January 11 at the All Ireland Masters Indoor Athletic Championship as he started the new year by winning three gold medals in the masters over 65 metres, 800metres, 1500 metres and 3000 metres at the Nenagh Olympic Indoor Athletic Stadium in County Tipperary. They did go to the ballLike everyone else the members of Kilbeggan Young at Heart Club were finding it hard to stay positive, what with the bleak weather, colds and flue and above all the bad news we were getting day after day.Every time they turned on the TV or read a newspaper they got a barrage of stories that told them that the world they thought they knew has now tilted on it"s axis and that there is worse to come.So members needed some cheering up and what could be more heartening than a good old fashioned pantomime?Off they took last week to the Gaiety Theatre ito see 'Cinderella', ne of the most popular of all shows and all the members thoroughly enjoyed the production. They were thrilled to watch one of the stars of the popular RTE show among the cast at the Gaiety and which included Maria McDermottroe, Leanne Moore and Richie Hayes all of whom gave scintillating performances. It was a lavish stage production with stunning effects and costumes and a terrific feel- good experience it off set the bad news and chilly weather. All the outings, daytrips and theatre and cinema visits of the Young at Heart members are organised by Anne Canton and Phyllis O"Malley who are busy planning more enjoyable excursions for us over the next few months. The club would like to say 'Thank You' to both of them. The committee is also busy making plans to celebrate the Bealtaine Festival next May.This festival which has been co -ordinated by Age and opportunity since 1995 celebrates creativity in older age and the month of May is a blaze of energy and activity for them. Each May festival has it"s own theme and this year the idea is 'Go and open the door'. It is taken from the poem "The Door" by the Czech poet, Miroslav Holub. It is an invitation to try something new and to explore new ways of celebrating Bealtaine. Kilbeggan Young at Heart will host its usual annual event in Kilbeggan Library next May and the committee members are also researching other activities including ball-room dancing, story telling and performance art.Kilbeggan Notes from SWEETSSafe-Pass Training Course will take place in the Harbour Buildings Kilbeggan on Saturday 21st February 2009.
