If you feel like singing head to Castletown!

Singing has always been a popular pastime in Ireland, at family gatherings; in pubs and anywhere else the humour might take one. However, with the strengthening of the traditional music scene, the music session took over.At such gatherings, the singer gets his or her chance, at best, to fill the gap while the musicians take a "sos beag".All that is changing now however.A new movement has been emerging over the last few years, with the purpose of giving the singers their own platform. The singing club or singing circle has emerged in many areas, and is proving very popular. At these gatherings singers can come together and can sing their songs in an atmosphere of appreciation and total attention. There are singing clubs in much of the country, and they are particularly strong in Offaly, Roscommon and Tipperary. While the emphasis is mainly on traditional songs there is nothing set in stone, and anyone can sing whatever they wish. One can hear old songs which haven"t been aired in years, as well as new material. The singers" club is a platform which is open to old and young, good or not-so-good singers: all are given a hearing and are appreciated. At present there is one such club in Westmeath. On the first Thursday of each month, in Claffey"s pub in Castletown-Geoghegan, singers get together and sing the night away. Run under the auspices of Castletown-Geoghegan Comhaltas, by Dick Stokes, there have been some great nights of singing, occasional tunes (just a few!) as well as the odd seanachie contribution. In addition to local performers, there have been guests from Longford, Offaly and Roscommon etc.The next such gathering will take place in Claffey"s on Thursday February 5th, starting at 9pm. All singers are welcome to attend, there is no charge at the door, and no invitation is required. Non-singers, who would just like a good night"s entertainment, are very welcome also.Remember then: Thursday 5th February, and as Leo Maguire used to say "If you feel like singing, do sing an Irish song"!
