Fine turn out for last Sunday"s men"s singles

With the prolonged fine spell, the members are coming out in numbers all over the country and all events have good attendances of late. The men"s branch ran a singles last week end and proved to be quite successful with a fine turn out and some very good scoring.The popular winner with a fine thirty eight stableford points was Brian Daly (13). Brian won by the minimum from Dave Farrelly (18) who in turn pipped Kevin Metcalfe (2) on the back nine rule. The Junior prize was won by Liam Grehan off eighteen with a fabulous thirty nine points.The presentation will take place on Sunday next, March 29 in conjunction with the John Burns (Club pro.) Classic competition which takes place on the day. Also in conjunction with same there will be the customary draw for a full set of golf clubs.St Patrick"s Day 3 person event proves very successfulThere was a fine turn out of members for the St Patrick"s Day three person team event with some very good scoring over the fifteen holes. The winners with 72 points were Geraldine Egan (16), Tom Moore (18) and Shay O"Callaghan (22); the Runners up on the same score were Peter Purcell (12), John Tweddle (14) and Tom E. Moore (20). Third prize went to Breda (15) and Liam (18) Conlon and Sean Finnegan (6) with 71 points. The presentation of those prizes takes place on Sunday next at eight o"clock sharp.Ladies BranchCocoon were the generous sponsors of last weeks 15 hole stableford competition. Conditions during the week were positively beautiful with the rough topped and the fairways lined with the broad sweeping strokes of Pat Liddy"s mower. Placing and dropping perhaps gave players an added bonus and the scoring proved it. No less than eight players returned 27 points on the day.The famous "computer" must have been billowing steam as it worked to separate the tied players. But under the stewardship of Marjorie Donoghue no task was impossible. In the end Joanne Killian had the best finish with thirteen points over the last six to make her 27 points the score that won the day. Breda Hawkshaw came second and Mary McCauley won the gross with 17 points. Third place went to Anne McHugh from Jane Glover, Tina Murphy, Carmel Monaghan, Joan O"Carroll and Annemarie Conlon who all deserve a mention.Men"s seniors" golfTuesday, March 10ths outing with over sixty competitors was an indicator of the improving golfing conditions. And with members heading out early in the day, to be back in time to view the action in Cheltenham, some of the better scores were posted early on. Vying for pole position we had Ed Dunne on 28points just edging out John G.Kelly also with 28 points, on the count back. In third place came Jim Prendergast on 26 points.The super-seniors" prize was won comfortably by Pat McKenna who has been playing consistently well in recent weeks.Winter LeagueThe finalists in the Morgan Golf Winter league are The Cowboys and the Redskins. Both semi finals were closely fought contests and resulted in three matches to two outcomes.Inter club affairsCommiserations to our Barton Cup squad who were narrowly beaten by near neighbours Co. Longford last Saturday. In the three matches to two result we lost two matches at tie holes. We wish better fortune to our Leinster Fourball side next week-end.
