Shaws win All-Ireland Father and Son fourball for second time in three years

The Bracken's Bar, Kinnegad All-Ireland Father and Son fourball again attracted a fine field of up to ninety pairs on Saturday last.Playing conditions were good on the rain softened course. Despite this the winning returns were a few shots better than last year. The winners, specialists in this event having won in 2007, were locals Eamon and Gary Shaw whose forty four stableford points better ball was one better that a quintet of pairs, the best of which were John and Colin Cunningham and Danny Grehan and his son, Liam. The best gross prize went to John and Patrick O'Sullivan from the Co. Louth 35 gross points.Sunday's outingLast Sunday's event, jointly sponsored by the men's branch committee and John Burns, club pro which clashed with the epic Open Championship in Turnberry attracted a fine field, with lots of competitors going out with the lark to get back to the 'box'. In all there were more than one hundred and fifty competitors and the scoring was very good.The winner with a fine forty stableford points was Vincent Corroon, who had the minimum to spare from the in-form John Tweddle, who has had the unenviable task of self adjusting downwards quite a bit of late. The best gross prize was won by Des Morgan, who knocked it round in sixty seven shots, showing a bit of timely form. The best seniors' return was thirty eight from Eamon Galligan and the category prizes were won by Greg Cleary, Stephen O'Hara and Thomas Keating. The juniors' prize went to Ross Maloney. Second and third went to Eugene Dunne (18) and Nicholas Murtagh (20) respectively with thirty one points apiece. The presentation will take place on this coming Thursday (July 23rd). The Swarbrigg Bros. sponsored matchplay is in full swing at the moment; keep an eye on the deadlines for the matches.Inter Club SceneWe congratulate the Irish Mixed squad on reaching the Leinster semi-final stages by virtue of some very good wins thus far. The venue for the next phase of the competition, I believe, is Castle Warden Golf Club and the arranged date is Saturday, August 8. We commiserate with the JB Carr and Tudenham Cup sides as they narrowly exited their respective competitions recently.Ladies BranchAnn Grehan wins Wines DirectThere was a tremendous turn out for the 18 holes stableford competition so generously sponsored by Wines Direct on Wednesday last. Ann Grehan, a player who has been a stalwart of the Junior Cup team, converted her excellent form of late into a magnificent win with a score of 39 points. Attracta Lennox continues to impress carding 37 points for the runner-up position.Meanwhile, Fiona Burke made a welcome return to the winner's enclosure perhaps signalling an end to the trials and tribulations of a swing hampered by injury. Her score of 22 points was the best gross return on the day. In third place was Suzanne Duffy whose score of 36 points made the grade just ahead of Una Stephens and Eleanor McArdle. Liz Armstrong garnered 20 points to be best over the front nine while Kay Browne's 21 point tally was best for the back nine.
