Westmeath Ladies GAA

Next Sunday, August 30 is a very important day in the calendar for Westmeath Ladies with club championship finals taking place in Castletown-Geoghegan. If last year's finals at the same venue are anything to go by, the 2009 finals should present a very enjoyable day out for everyone so we encourage everyone to come along to enjoy a feast of Ladies football.Intermediate Final - Mullingar v. Kilbeggan - 1pmFirst up at 1pm is the Intermediate final when Kilbeggan and Mullingar battle it out for a place in the senior ranks. Kilbeggan have enjoyed senior status for the last few years and suffered relegation in 2008. However in their first year at Intermediate they have turned things around and now find themselves in the final after a good win over Moate in the semi-final. Mullingar on the other hand have been playing at Intermediate for the last number of years and have made it to the final on three occasions during that time but haven't manage to claim victory to date. Mullingar enjoyed a comprehensive victory over Athlone in the semi-final and will be hoping to make history on Sunday.Senior Final - Coralstown/Kinnegad v. Garrycastle - 2.30pmThe race for the senior title kicks off at 2.30pm when last years champions, Garrycastle face Coralstown/Kinnegad. Both finalists were placed second in their respective groups and both teams had narrow victories in the semi-finals with Coralstown/Kinnegad scraping a one point victory over Killucan while Garrycastle had two points to spare over Milltown.Coralstown/Kinnegad has a long history in ladies football and claimed their first title in 1988 when they overcame Rochfortbridge who were the dominant force at the time and claiming their latest title in 2001.Garrycastle being a younger club gained senior status in 2001 and claimed their first title in 2003 and again in 2008. These sides have met only once over the past few years in the championship of 2007 and with very little history between them this should be a very interesting tie on Sunday.FixtureThe Junior tie between Loughnavalley and Ballycomoyle will be played at a later date.Best wishesThe county board would like to take this opportunity to wish all finalists and officials the very best on Sunday next and encourage as many as possible to come along and support their team.
