Aaron McCarthy wins President's Prize

The final round of the 2009 President's Prize (Mr. Tommy McNamee) was held on Saturday, August 22. Once again, the weather tried to spoil proceedings but the course held up very well, despite heavy rain during the week and the final went ahead as scheduled. It was a very closely contested final round but, in the end, the leader from the qualifying round, Aaron McCarthy, kept his nerve and emerged the winner by one shot from Ray Mulligan, who put up a very gallant effort.A feature of this competition was the emergence of some of our younger players and great credit must go to Emmet O'Neill and Dale Duignan who played magnificent golf over the two days. Their scores of 132 and 134 nett respectively, indicate that these two young men have very bright futures in the game. Another of our younger players, Aaron Hennessy, also played great golf and had a very respectable score of 142. Well done to all and to Aaron on his great win!Full results are as follows (all scores are nett): Winner: Aaron McCarthy, 134; Runner-up: Emmet O'Neill, 132; Gross: David Fulham, 156Category 1: 1st: Richie Cahill, 139; 2nd: Aaron Hennessy, 142; 3rd: John Cunningham, 144Category 2: 1st: Ray Mulligan, 135; 2nd: Tommy Timmons, 144; 3rd: Roy Bracken, 145Category 3: 1st: Dale Duignan, 134; 2nd: Philip Aughey, 137; 3rd: Andy Moran, 150Seniors: Walter Walker, 150; Best Qualifier Round 1: Eugene Curley, 65 (O.C.B)Best score Round 2: Feilim O Neill, 74Past President: Senator Donie Cassidy, 150Results fromother competitions:Sunday, August 9: Parent and Child Competition - Winners: Liam and Aaron Hennessy, 39 ptsSunday, August 9: Singles Stableford - Winner: Enda Lambden, 43 pts; Cat 1: Ken Colgan, 39 pts; Cat 2: Gerry Maguire, 36 (O.L.9); Cat 3: Noel Bennett, 34Scratch CupsThe Minor, Junior and Intermediate Scratch Cups were played for last Sunday week, August 30. It was extremely well supported and everyone who attended enjoyed themselves immensely. It began with a mixed scramble over six holes, to give everyone an opportunity to take part, followed by a short talk on the rules by John Kearney. The evening concluded with a barbeque and music. There will be another talk on the rules in the clubhouse on November 24 and the speaker will be a member of the G.U.I. so this is an excellent opportunity for members who are unsure of the rules to clear up any ambiguities they may have. The winners of the scramble were first six: John Ayres, Philp Aughey and Tina Gaffney (6.0), second six: Paul Garry, Wilfred Dwoark and M. Gavigan (18.5), back six: P. Farrelly, D.
