Local club honours past members
North Westmeath GFC Ballycomoyle are to honour two deceased members of their club with the creation of two new cups to be contested this weekend.The Paddy Masterson Memorial Cup honours Ballycomoyle native and staunch supporter of the club, Paddy Masterson, who tragically lost his life in a road accident in September 8th 2008. The second cup honours Fore lady Kathleen Corrigan, who became ill after attending the club's La na gClub last spring and sadly passed away later that week.Club PRO Ray Farrelly described this weekends competitions as a massive sporting and cultural weekend:"The two new cups are to be contested on the Friday night with the Paddy Masterson Cup, The Kathleen Corrigan Memorial Cup and the 7-aside finals all being played at the club grounds."Saturday is all about the wonderful heritage provided by traditional Irish music, song and dance. The local CCE, Clan Lir, are hosting a fantastic concert in Coole hall on the Saturday night but also during the day there will be traditional music workshops on in the GAA Hall in Castlepollard, so that young people with a passion and interest can come along and learn new skills or polish existing ones.This showcase of traditional Irish music, song and dance starts in Coole Hall at 7.30pm sharp and admission is adults €10 and children €5.The club has also lined up a family fun day on the Sunday with races and events to suit all ages."One of the great spectacles of the weekend will be the launch of 1000 balloons. And from pretty to pretty strong, the evening will be concluded by the much anticipated local tug-o-war competition for the "Seven Wonders Bar" Perpetual Shield and the Abbey House Bar Perpetual Shield.This is a big competition among local people and already there has been a great deal of rivalry building between friends and neighbours," explained ray.
