Mullingar man fined €750 for public order offences

Convicted of two breaches of the Public Order Act, following an incident in the centre of Mullingar last August, a local man was fined €750 when he appeared before Judge John F. Neilan at Mullingar District Court. He was David Connolly, 10, The Beehives, Mullingar who admitted breaches of Sections 4 and 6 of the Act.Inspector Kieran Keyes, who appeared for the Director of Public Prosecutions, agreed to strike out further charges, one under Section 8 of the Public Order Act and another alleging he obstructed a Garda at Oliver Plunkett Street, Mullingar on August 26 last.Insp. Keyes told the court that Gardai were called to an incident which originated in a pub close to the corner of Oliver Plunkett Street and Dominick Street. When they arrived they found a number of men who were fighting. Mr. Connolly was abusive to the officers and was ordered to leave the premises.In his defence, Mr. Louis Kiernan, Solicitor who represented Mr. Connolly, said his client had intervened on behalf of his father. He accepted he did not act appropriately on the occasion.For breaching Section 6 of the Public Order Act, Judge Neilan fined Mr. Connolly €500 with a fine of €250 being imposed on the Section 4 conviction.
