'Help find my father' plea from daughter of disappeared man
PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO SEE VIDEOThe daughter of a man who vanished in Mullingar 27 years ago has this week issued a plea hoping that someone might, at this stage, be able to tell her what became of her father.Mary Ward, of D'Alton Park, still dreams about her dad, Patrick Nevin, who was last seen at St. Anthony's Cottages, just off Patrick Street, in June 1983."I cannot understand how he could disappear off the earth," Mary told the Westmeath Examiner this week."I'm hoping that if anyone knows where he is, or if anyone has information, that they will go to the Gardaí."Mary's fantasy is that her father is in a nursing home somewhere, perhaps with his memory gone.But if he is still alive, he would be 93.Deep down, she believes he is not alive: she worries that on the day he went missing, he fell into the Canal. What would put her mind at rest would be to know what became of him, and to be able to give him a Catholic funeral."He was a quiet man, a family man, no trouble to anyone," says Mary, adding that her father was quite tall - measuring about 5'9" in height.He has grandchildren - and now great-grandchildren as well who all puzzle over the family mystery.At the time of his disappearance, Patrick was living in Ennell Court, with his daughter, Anne Nevin.His sister, the late Mary Nevin, lived just a hundred yards from Anne's house, and Patrick went there for a chat and had a couple of drinks.Some time later, Anne's son and two of her brothers-in-law - all then teenagers of about 12 or 13 years of age - came up to fetch him home.Paddy set off with the youngsters, but stopped to speak with a neighbour, the late Christopher "Ditsy" Joyce, at St. Anthony's Cottages, and the children went on.After Paddy said goodbye to Ditsy, he set off for home - but was never seen again."If he was dead, if I could just find his bones, to put him down with the family, that would be my wish," says Mary.
