Frank McDonagh wins Genesis competition from large field

Mullingar Golf Club News -- In one of the biggest fields of the year so far, the competitors found low scoring hard to come by in the blustery conditions off the blue markers. Three men managed to hit the right note and return thirty eight points apiece. Frank McDonagh, returning to near his best form got the nod on the tie break rule from low handicapper Peter Wallace and Richard Toal.The best gross prize was won by our low man Des Morgan, who knocked it round in seventy shots. Among others to score below the nett par were prizewinners Alan Kelly, Sonny Martin and Elan Darcy. The prize presentation will take place on Sunday week next in conjunction with the Army prize.ResultsGenesis competitionWinner: Frank McDonagh (12) 38 points; runner-up - Peter Wallace (3) 38 points, third - Richard Toal (16) 38 points, fourth - Alan Kelly (12) 37 points, best gross - Des Morgan (+3) 38 points, seniors - Sonny Martin (13) 37 points, juniors - Elan Darcy (20) 37 points.Inter club mattersWe congratulate the Irish mixed foursomes' panel and the Newsome Cup squad on their fine victories over Killeen Castle and Navan Golf Clubs respectively over the weekend.Our Barton Cup side are out next weekend as are the Donald Bell led Pierce Purcell panel and both are wished the best of luck.Seniors' golfThe seniors who travelled to Ballykisteen Golf Resort on Tuesday, May 11 were met with ideal golfing conditions on a wonderfully sunny day. The course proved a worthy test with only a few playing to par or better.However, one person did master the greens and came home a deserving winner. Tom Keegan was that man and he was followed closely by Liam Conlon and John Maher. Everyone enjoyed the trip and our thanks to our Captain, Mick and Ray for all the excellent arrangements.Ladies BranchThe annual Lancôme Scotch foursomes took place on May 12. An extremely popular event we had 114 players from 19 clubs competing. Martina O'Brien and Mary Grennan, from Birr, won with a wonderful 43 points. Our Presidential pairing of Rosaleen Shaw (Lady President) and Sylvia Tormey (Past President) were second with 42 points.The gross went to Woodenbridge duo Denise McCarty (Captain of the Leinster squad) and Michelle Crummy and third place went to Jean Bennett and Geraldine Egan. Front Nine was won by Bernadette Solon and Kathy Whelan and back nine went to Ann Fagan and Attracta Lennox.A big thank you to all the members and staff that helped to make the Midland Ladies Senior Cup Championships such a success. The greens staff, Bar and catering and our own members who acted as hostesses to visiting teams. A special mention went to Sean Finnegan who coordinated everything with his usual precision and panache. Feedback from our visitors was excellent. Given the weather conditions this year the course was in excellent condition.In a thrilling final Carlow were victorious over Wexford. Well done and hard luck to the Mullingar squad who were beaten by the narrowest of margins in the quarter finals by the eventual winners.
