School drugs event open to parents and students

Parents of youngsters attending Mullingar’s second level schools are to get the inside track on substance abuse at a special evening at the school later this month.On Thursday October 21 at 7.30 p.m., there are to be a series of talks at Coláiste Mhuire - and parents of pupils attending any second level school in the locality are welcome along.Students are also welcome to attend the event, which has been organised by the Coláiste Mhuire Parents’ Council.Details of the evening were revealed at the Parents’ Council agm, held on Wednesday night last.In the election of officers, the chairperson, vice-chairperson, secretary, assistant secretary, treasurer and assistant treasurer were all re-elected unopposed.They are Sandra Neville (Chairperson), Marie Hayden (Vice-Chairperson), Frank Masterson (Secretary), Liz Eivers (Assistant Secretary), Eileen Duncan (Treasurer), Teresa Carroll (Assistant Treasurer). Peter Carter was elected as P.R.O. All the other parents in attendance were elected as members of the Parents’ Council.Prior to the election, chairperson Sandra Neville welcomed all present and explained that the Council, while not involved in the day to day running of the school is actively involved in having inputs into various school policies and organising speakers and events for both the parents and students.Secretary Frank Masterson read the minutes of the previous agm, and recalled the Council’s activities of the past year, while treasurer Eileen Duncan revealed the Council to be on a sound financial footing.School Principal Mr Joe O’Meara, expressed his thanks and that of all the staff to the Parents’ Council for their wonderful support and ongoing work on behalf of the school.“The Parents’ Council is a vital link of communication between the parents of the students and the school. It played a very important role in a number of policy documents including the Homework Policy which all students received in the past few days.“On behalf of the staff, the “parents and the students of Colaiste Mhuire, I thank you for your wonderful work not only last year but in all the years that the Council has been working her in the school,” said Mr O’Meara.
