A brave new world for Tormey Auctioneers
The recession may have taken a huge bite out of the property market, but one young Mullingar auctioneer is ignoring the prevailing doom and gloom to set up on his own.Tormey Auctioneers has been open for business on Mullingar's Mary Street since mid-August, and with an official opening due in the near future, Eddie Tormey is happy to report that his new business is off to a flier.Despite the crippling effects of the recession on the sale of houses, a hugely upbeat atmosphere reigns supreme in Mullingar, and Eddie hopes to tap into that positive feeling by taking the initiative and embarking on his own business adventure.Tormey Auctioneers is affiliated to the Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers (IPAV), and Eddie brings to the table over a decade of experience as an auctioneer.A native of Bunbrosna, Eddie is a former pupil of St. Cremin's National School, Multyfarnham, and later a student of Coláiste Mhuire, Mullingar. He farmed for a number of years before deciding to make his name as an auctioneer, maintaining the family farm during the day, and taking IPAV-affiliated night courses at University College, Dublin.Ten years ago, he joined the staff of Property Partners McDonnell of Oliver Plunkett Street, Mullingar, and cut his teeth during the fiercely competitive real estate world of boom-time Westmeath.âI did a lot of commercial stuff with McDonnell's,â Eddie said. âI looked after a lot of development land, and being at the height of the boom, it was very busy.âHappily, I got the chance to try my hand at a bit of everything, be it lettings, sales or valuations, and at the end of my ten years there I became pretty well known in the business locally.âIt's a brave decision starting out as an independent auctioneer, at a time when so many are throwing in the towel across the country.âI always thought I'd go out on my own at some stage,â Eddie said, explaining that by starting with a clean slate, ânow is as good a time as anyâ.âThere will be opportunities coming up,â he continued. âI'd like to think that house prices won't come down any further.âRents are fairly busy at the moment. Sales are still relatively slow, as they are across the board, but we're still doing bits and pieces. âWe have some good properties for sale in the town, and the country, and we operate within around a twenty mile radius of Mullingar. One property we have on our books at the moment is as far afield as Drumraney.âStarting out on one's own, free from an alliance with a real estate chain, is the best way forward according to Eddie, who maintains that in a changing Ireland, people will now be more inclined to âstick to the local guyâ.Tormey Auctioneers is very much a family business, and key to the new enterprise is Eddie's mother Eileen. Also a former member of staff at Property Partners McDonnell, Eileen has over twenty years of sales experience. The fledgling company launches its new website, www.tormeyauctioneers.ie, later this week, and this will be your future online point of contact for the terrific array of properties on offer by Tormey Auctioneers. If you're in the market, why not contact Eddie on 044-9333377 to schedule an appointment or a viewing. The company's state-of-the-art new premises includes an upstairs meeting room where deals can be thrashed out and details discussed in private. The Tormey HQ is part of a heartening rejuvenation of Mary Street amidst one of the toughest times ever experienced by businesses in Mullingar.Eddie may also be contacted on086-2450616, via e-mail on eddie@tormeyauctioneers.ie,or by fax on 044-9333378.
