Glynn bows out gracefully after 32 years in politics

Local Senator Camillus Glynn has announced that he will not be putting himself forward as a candidate for the upcoming Seanad Elections.Having spent almost 32 years in political life, the Senator said he had took the decision some months ago after talking it through with his family. "After a long time in public life I think it's time now to pass on the baton to somebody new," Senator Glynn told the Westmeath Examiner.Senator Glynn first entered public life as a member of Mullingar Town Commission as it was then, and of Westmeath County Council in June 1979. During this time, he was Chairman of Westmeath County Council on two occasions, from 1988 to 1989 and again in 1993 to 1994. He also served as Cathaoirleach of Mullingar Town Council in 1990 - 1991, as well as spending many years as a member of the Midland Health Board. He was a delegate on the Municipal Authorities of Ireland for many years and president of this body in 1989 - 1990. He was also a member of the Local Authority Members Association and many other sub-committees of Westmeath County Council and the Midland Health Board.Camillus became a member of Seanad Eireann in August 1997, and was re-elected in July 2002, gaining the highest votes of any candidate on any of the five vocational panels. Re-elected in July 2007, he served as Deputy Government Whip from 2002 to date, Senator Glynn has always had a keen interest in Irish language and culture, and been a keen advocate for both.To read more see this week's Westmeath Examiner
