TD Joe Higgins to speak at Mullingar anti-taxes meeting

Socialist Party TD Joe Higgins is to speak at a rally against household and water charges in Mullingar on Thursday of this week. The meeting has been organised by the Campaign Against Household and Water Taxes, for The Greville Arms Hotel on Thursday February 16 at 7.30pm.According to a Campaign spokesperson, only four per cent of homes have, to date, paid the €100 household charge."Ninety six per cent of householders have not signed up, with an actual slow-down in the rate since early January," they stated."If this rate was to continue, only 12% would have registered by March 31. Even if the rate doubled, 76% would be boycotting the tax. Registration also includes people not liable for the charge at all, masking the real level of non-payment."Joe Higgins TD said: "We are confident that this tax can and will be beaten. People see this as their one real chance to send a message about the ongoing austerity. Non-payment and non-registration are the only effective means to beat the tax and we encourage people to hold firm, ignore the government propaganda that will come and see that, by St Patrick's Day, we can have hundreds of thousands refusing to register and make the tax unworkable."The campaign has launched a hotline for people seeking information or to oppose the household tax, at 1890 98 98 00.
