Look out for the Gathering Greeters on St Patrick's Day

Look out for the Gathering Greeters at St Patrick’s Day Parades in Mullingar and Athlone this weekend.

Distinctive in their lime green bibs, the greeters will be operating in teams throughout the day.

Their presence is thanks to the Gathering Westmeath Steering Group and the Westmeath Volunteer Centre, managed by Westmeath Community Development.

The greeters will feature at different events throughout the year as part of the Gathering.

There are now 50+ gathering events scheduled for the county, and more are being added all the time.

Bob Morrison, chairman of Westmeath Gathering Steering Group, expressed his thanks to the volunteers ahead of St Patrick’s Day: “Having local people on the street with a good knowledge of what’s on in and about Mullingar is a great service for visitors to the town,” he said.

“We hope to build on this at various other events in the county during this year of the Gathering.”

Ian O’Flynn, one of the greeters (and manager of Westmeath Volunteer Centre, which was responsible for recruiting the volunteers), said: “It’s great to be part of this first outing for the greeters. Some people will probably thin us a bit of a novelty, but we’re hoping for a good reception and we will be available to provide assistance on the day.”

If you need volunteers for your Gathering event, or would like to become a Gathering greeter, contact Ian or Michelle at Westmeath Volunteer Centre, Westmeath Community Development at 044 9348571.
