My Memories... Bressie

What age were you when you were ‘allowed’ go to your first disco? Did you have to put on a lot of pressure to get permission?
I have very open-minded, liberal parents so they never stood in my way when I was a teenager.
I was 15 going to Bloomfield for the first time and the world’s worst dancer, so never set foot on a dance floor again.

Where was the first disco you went to?
Was it Bloomfield, or did you have to work your way up to that?
My first disco was the Lions Club in the Greville.

What other discos were popular around at the time (eg the Lake County, Newbury, Greville)?
The Stables was always big and the Fence but Tubby Gibney would never let me into the Fence cause he knew my Da and knew I was underage.

What bands were big?
Nirvana and Oasis.

Did you hate or enjoy the slow sets?
I always managed to go missing for the ones.

Was there much opportunity at the time to attend live gigs locally?
Once again the Stables was a great venue that Ronan Casey, Dec Murray and Justin Moffatt ran. Guys like Snow Patrol and Damien Rice played on any Saturday night.

Was there much craic on the journeys out on the Bloomfield bus?
All the cool kids sat at the back... I sat at the front!

Did you follow the usual post-disco ritual of chips? If so, where from?
I would travel the world for a bag of Roma chips.

Where was your own first gig?
The Stables with a death metal band called Ramscar.

Did you find it odd being on stage, as opposed to be down among the audience?
Depends on whether I am watching someone I like or not.

Do you ever go clubbing now?
I have been known to vacate a dance floor every now and again but my dancing skills have not improved with age.

Bressie is hosting a ’90s reunion disco in the Bloomfield House Hotel this Saturday June 8 in aid of LARCC, for which he is an ambassador.
