Moldova 5k run is at Belvedere today

In the run-up to his mercy mission to Moldova, Mullingar An Post employee Trevor Thompson has organised a charity 5k walk/run at Belvedere today, Wednesday June 19 at 7.30pm.

Trevor, inspired by a TV programme showing how An Post and Eircom, in conjunction with the Communication Workers Union deliver aid each year to different countries, volunteered to undertake this year’s trip.

He and colleague Paul O’Neill have been chosen to go ahead with the project, and the two will raise funds for and deliver aid to a social and educational centre in Tiraspol, Moldova that cares for hundreds of children, many with mental and physical disabilities.  The 5k at Belvedere, under the banner of the CWU Humanitarian Aid Convoy, has an entry fee of €10 for adults, and €5 for children. Registration opens at 6.30pm.

Trevor, and his wife, a preschool teacher, have two children: “We do our best to ensure that our children eat well, get a good education, participate in sports and other activities so that they have every chance to grow in to well rounded and happy adults,” says Trevor.

“The contrast between what my children, and a lot of children in Ireland have and what the children in these centres have is huge.

“I have received the wish list from the centre – there are no PlayStations, iPods or smart phones. It is blankets, books, school supplies, tables, chairs, food, towels, a washing machine. Things that are often taken for granted here in Ireland.

“I guarantee that all monies raised will be spent on items to fill the truck that will be delivered to the centre.”
