Practice makes perfect for Mullingar Town Band

It’s shaping up to be another busy summer for the Mullingar Town Band as they prepare to compete in The World Music Contest in both the Marching Band and Concert Band categories.

With plenty of practice under their belts, the band’s marching show for this year’s competitions is based on the national event The Gathering, showcasing music by John Williams (Far and Away theme) U2’s infamous Beautiful Day, Sinéad Ó Connor’s Nothing Compares to You and an Irish favourite Spanish Lady.

They departed on Thursday July 18 for what is their ninth trip to The Netherlands! It offers each member the opportunity to compete at an international level in the field of marching and wind ensemble. Those who have competed previously recall the feeling of adrenaline and pride as they represented both Mullingar (and Ireland) in front of a crowded stadium in Kerkrade. Earlier this month, they travelled to Arklow to compete in their first competition of the season where they came a close second, to Tallaght Youth Band.

Mullingar came away, however, with first place in the parade competition showcasing both Irish music and popular music from artists such as Celo Green! The competition coincided with the 25th anniversary of the Irish Marching Bands Association and the band wishes to express their thanks to the IMBA committees over the years for keeping the scene of the Irish Marching Bands alive and kicking.

The Town Band have also completed a four day band camp with the legendary Ed Otto from the United States as he, once again, shared his expertise and knowledge. On the band’s return from Holland they will be taking a well deserved break and will be back in action at the end of August to prepare for the Irish Marching Band’s Association finals competition in September. They would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support in all of their fundraising efforts and to all those in the background who work away quietly organising these events.

Finally, the band invite you to check out their Facebook page “Mullingar Town Band- Celtic Crusaders” for information and updates.
