Culture Night show stopper! Irish Midlands Youth Orchestra plays the Atrium

On Friday September 20, Culture Night will be celebrated all across the country and Westmeath is most definitely one of the counties that has embraced the theme and passion behind what it represents.

Westmeath will host more than 55 free events across the county, from Athlone to Mullingar, Delvin, Castlepollard, Kilbeggan, Ballynacargy, Moate and Castletown Geoghegan...

A special event in Mullingar is the arrival of the Irish Midlands Youth Orchestra in the sound heaven of the Atrium at the County Buildings, where they will perform from 6.30-7.30pm – a show not to be missed.
Doors will open at 6pm and there is likely to be a packed house, so arrive early to experience musical magic.

Also in Mullingar, you will seeing yarn bombing across the town, where colour and creativeness take monuments and locations. The Mullingar Student Players will present The Crucible in Mullingar Arts Centre and Ruth Illingworth will give a guided tour of Mullingar Cathedral – just three of 20+ free events in Mullingar.

In Athlone, Mike O’Donnell will take you down the river Shannon on his Viking boat at 4pm, or you could pop into the Luan Gallery to see the RDS Student Art Awards Exhibition. Later in the evening Tonnta Street Theatre and Community Arts Group Fire Breathing Show will be a crowd puller at 8.30pm, along with the Little Museum of Memories opening its doors with live music.
Again, that is just a small number of the events in Athlone.

In Kilbeggan, TP O’Gorman will exhibit the work of illustrator Eileen Coghlan, and Kilbeggan Distillery will offer complimentary tours at 6pm, 7pm and 8pm.

Ballynacargy and Castletown Geoghegan will be busy with all sorts of entertainment. Ballynacargy and Castletown Geoghegan CCÉ dancers will perform two special shows, Cara Phort FRC promises a display of knitting and crochet work, and there is a sean-nos hour in The Hazel Gallery.

The Grocery in Tyrrellspass hosts a talk by archeologist Rónán Swan on recent major road building in the area.
Delvin will also be a hot spot thanks to a Group Art Exhibition in The Garden Gallery and a special contribution from Mary McEvoy.
Castlepollard and Fore will be a hive of activity with the CastlepollArt Big Paint In and the Making Sounds Visible Exhibition. There will also be chalk street art from Ursula Meehan and Teresa Doyle and if you feel a tour is something you would enjoy, heritage guide Bartle D’Arcy will entertain as he takes you around the interior of the Nugent Mausoleum at 8pm.

Moate is another location with exhibitions, open days and traditional Irish sessions. Also there will be a two-hour slot between 4.30-6.30 to view the newly built amenity park in Moate. There will be guided tours, attractions and light refreshments.
Across town you can catch the Celtic Blondes dancing in P Egan’s and there will be great interest in the works of Dominique Foley, Lorna Farrell and the students of Moate Community School in the Tuar Ard Arts Centre.
