Manchester United supporters, Danielle Gibney and Shauna Gahan, Mullingar, met Liverpool legend John Aldridge on Wednesday.

Liverpool legend in Mullingar

Liverpool legend and former Ireland Liverpool striker John Aldrige was in the Crossbar, Mullingar last night (Wednesday).

WE: John, is this your first trip to Mullingar?

JA: “No, I’ve been here a few times playing football, seeing some friends and socialising. It’s definitely not my last trip here. I will be back again.”

Have you ever considered trying to get the job as manager of Ireland?

“No. I’ve been out of the game too long at this stage, about 12 years. I wouldn’t have the qualifications to manage an international team. But never say never (laughs).”

In an ideal world, who would you pick as manager of Ireland?

“That would depend on who’s available, but in an ideal world it would have to be Jack Charlton, that’s tongue in cheek obviously (laughs).”

What was you best moment wearing an Irish Jersey?

“There’s so many good memories - probably scoring in the World Cup against Mexico, it was the goal that got us through to the last 16, although it was 2-1, it was an extra point, and beating England in Stuttgart.

What was your worst memory in an Irish Jersey?

“Not qualifying for the Euros in 1992.”

Lots of pics from the night in next week's Westmeath Examiner.
