Ska's Good Gravy play Mullingar on December 23

Blending a mix of ska, rocksteady and reggae, Ska’s Good Gravy are embarking on their first mini tour of the country this month which includes The Stables venue on December 23 as part of its 24th anniversary celebrations.

The latter venue is where it all started. Taking their name from The Skatalites track Good Gravy, the collective formed following a tribute night in memory of their friend and fellow musician, Cani Bruton, in 2012.

“It’s an eclectic mix of musicians is made up of 20-somethings to 50-somethings,” says Frank Byrne, frontman of the band.

“I suppose what’s unique about us is that we have a four-piece brass section, and I would say that the driving force behind the band is the horn section.

“It’s also our interpretation of the genre that no other band on the ska scene are even touching right now,” he says. From their Jazz standard, I’m In The Mood For Love, to their Jamaican styled Jump (Van Halen), and frenzied usuals including The Specials, Bob Marley and Toots and the Maytals, this is a two-hour show that will keep you entertained every beat of the way.

The line-up includes Frank Byrne on lead vocals and guitar; Ger Kiernan (bass guitar); John Byrne (lead guitar, banjo); Fionn O’Donohoe (drums, percussion); Dave Fox (keyboards); Adrian Kelly (tenor sax); Dave Traynor (baritone sax, harmonica); Paul Kiernan (trumpet), and Anthony Daly (trombone).

The clue is in the name people! These guys are as flawless in their instrumentals as they are in their interpretation of everyone’s ska favourites.
