Sunday's Well Road residents frustrated as workers take up all parking spaces

Residents of a street in Mullingar are finding it difficult to get parking spaces at their own homes, due to workers parking there all day, Cllr Aidan Davitt told fellow councillors at the monthly meeting of Mullingar Town Council.

“People are constantly parking there – they come in at 8.30 and they stay all day,” said Cllr Davitt, as he outlined the frustration of the residents of Sundays Well Road.

He called on the council to review its parking policy on Sundays Well Road, stating that the reason workers are parking there is that there is no paid parking requirement there.

The council’s response was that the issue was a matter for the members of Westmeath County Council’s Mullingar Area members.

“The members did ask that there be some control on parking there, and we were looking at putting in machines, but it was felt the income wouldn’t justify the expense,” said council official, Declan Leonard, explaining that it would cost around €11,000 to install two machines – one at either end of the road.

He said an option was the introduction of residents’ permits, and a process allowing those with work permits to park there.

Other issues
At the same meeting, Cllr Davitt was told, however, that the council has “no plans” to carry out works outside a house at Millmount Avenue, where, he said, there was a ponding issue. The council replied that the ponding was “minor”.

A request by Cllr Davitt that the council secure a gap at Newlands, was also unsuccessful, as the council declared it had no plans to carry out works at that location. On a more positive note, his request that potholes at Clonsheever, Rathconnell, be repaired elicited the response that the work has been done.
