Start the holiday weekend with a Summer Concert

The line-up for the Mullingar Town Band Summer Concert with the Garda Band this week includes special guests Paul Kiernan, Adam Collins, and Dervilla Maloney and the Lynn Singers.

The concert is today, Thursday, May 1, in the Cathedral of Christ the King at 7.30pm and the band will play a selection of music to include One Direction, Billy Joel, Neil Diamond, The Blue Danube, Radetzsky March, The Galway Girl and more.

The Garda Band will be conducted on the night by Inspector Pat Kenny and will play a selection of music from their own repertoire.

The organisers are calling it a programme of light music to kick-start the May bank holiday weekend. Tickets are €10 and are available from band members and Walsh’s Jewellers.

Adam Collins

Adam Collins is an alumnus of the Schola Cantorum, Mullingar and is currently in his first year in the Royal Irish Academy of Music, where he studies harpsichord, piano and composition with David Adams, Hugh Tinney and Kevin O’Connell.

An accomplished clarinettist, Adam began his music career in the Mullingar Town Band, where he learned the clarinet with Hubert Magee and later played the bassoon, bass-clarinet and trumpet. Adam is the youngest of his predecessors in the Pro Cathedral, where he was appointed Organ Scholar in 2013, aged 17.

Adam won the Fitzgerald Trophy for advanced organ playing in this year’s Feis Ceol. Since making his debut performance in the NCH in 2012 as a Feis prizewinner, he has appeared in recitals in the Pro Cathedral, Tullamore International Organ Series, Mercy Convent, Dublin and regular performances in his home town.

In April, Adam had the opportunity to perform one of Handel’s organ concertos with the Orchestra of St Cecilia, who he also conducted. Adam works regularly as a vocal accompanist in the RIAM for many teachers, including Veronica Dunne, and recently won the Feis’s Milne Cup for accompanist and singer with soprano Sarah Brady.

Upcoming performances include an organ recital in the Pro Cathedral and a performance of one of his large scale compositions with RIAM based contemporary group, Kirkos, in May.

Lynn Singers

Lynn Singers were assembled to perform Christmas Carols for charity, and when it became apparent that the group of young ladies possessed vocal and musical talent and potential, the Lynn Singers were established. They are highly committed and share a common ideal of making music to the highest standards. Many take vocal and instrumental tuition privately, which contributes to their personal artistic development and the overall quality of the choir. Many members are Feis Ceoil vocal solo winners.

The choir are still in their infancy but their vision is not only to provide enjoyment for performers and audiences, and to nurture technical and musical skills, enabling them to perform all genres of choral music to a high standard.

Their musical director is Dervilla Maloney, whose love and expertise in choral music has been influenced by her expertise as a soloist and as a member of RTÉ Chamber Choir, now Chamber Choir Ireland.

Lynn Singers will perform a selection of music to include Puttin’ on the Ritz, Lift Thine Eyes, Over the Rainbow, Flower Duet and Now is the Month of Maying.

Paul Kiernan

Paul Kiernan began the trumpet in the Mullingar Town Band at the age of eight. At the age of 14 he joined the junior Conservatory of Music and Drama under Eamonn Nolan. Since then he has toured with the Crossborder Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra and the European Union Youth Wind Orchestra to places like China, the Netherlands and the United Arab Emirates.

He has also performed with the Hibernian Orchestra and is a current member of the Irish Youth Wind Ensemble, the DIT Symphony Orchestra and the DIT Wind Ensemble. This year Paul has participated in the NSO Mentoring Scheme and has won a competition to perform a concerto with one of the conservatories senior ensembles. Paul hopes to pursue a professional career on the trumpet after he completes his studies.
