The Cat Stone on the Hill of Uisneach

Westmeath residents urged to make the most of heritage weekprint

Tours of old Mullingar, the Hill of Uisneach and Athlone Castle are just some of the hidden gems to discover during Heritage Week which runs from Saturday August 23 to Sunday August 31.

The call was put out there by Labour TD Willie Penrose who asked Westmeath citizens to "go local" and explore all Westmeath Has to offer.

Heritage Weeks offers plenty of intrigue to keep inquisitive minds busy," said Willie Penrose.

"I would especially urge families to avail of the free events. Dozens of events are taking place across Westmeath to celebrate Heritage Week.

"Local attractions such as Athlone Castle, the Hill of Uisneach and tours of Old Mullingar, and many more events, are expected to attract crowds of people."

The TD also said that as a nation we can be slow to discover what's available on our own doorstep.

“Ireland continues to attract a growing number of foreign visitors, sometimes we can be slow to appreciate the beauty on our own door steps.

"Heritage Week serves us a timely reminder of the many fantastic attractions which the county holds, and is a great chance to get out and enjoy it.”
