The typical couple getting married in Westmeath last year were in their 30s; Catholic, the man exactly two years older than the woman – and in 83.7 per cent of cases, they were both from Westmeath.
Or that’s more or less what the latest statistics on marriage and civil partnership figures released by the CSO reveal.
In 2013, some 362 men living in Westmeath tied the knot, as did 357 women whose place of residence was given as Westmeath.
In total, some 455 marriages were conducted in Westmeath in 2013, and in 362 of those, either (or both) the bride or groom were from Westmeath.
In 303 of those marriages, both parties in the marriage were from Westmeath.
Of the remainder, 47 of the Westmeath-based men married women from other parts of Ireland, and 7 married women from outside the Republic, while of the brides, 54 married men from other parts of this country, and five married men from abroad.
In the vast majority of cases, both parties were marrying for the first time. Three of the women who married were widows, and 24 were divorced; two of the men were widowers, and 23 were divorced.
While the average age of men getting married in Westmeath is 34.7, and of women, 32.7, three of the Westmeath brides, and three grooms, were aged under 20.
Five of the men who married were aged 60 or over, but just 1 of the women.
Besides the 304 Catholic ceremonies performed in the county, there were 8 Church of Ireland ceremonies, 19 “other” religious ceremonies, and 124 civil marriages.

Divorce
When it came to the other side of marriage – divorce – the figures show that some 75 divorce applications were received in the Mullingar circuit court office in 2013, and 36 divorces were granted.
In addition, there were 24 applications for judicial separation, and 2 such separations were granted.

Civil partnerships
Two sets of couples – one male and one female – entered into civil partnerships last year with Westmeath given as their future area of residence.
Neighbouring counties, Offaly and Longford were the only counties in Leinster for which there were no civil partnerships registered in 2013.
