Grab the woolies polar air mass on the way

A polar air mass is expected to reach Ireland on Wednesday January 28, bringing with it wintery showers and plunging temperatures.

A north westerly airflow will sweep in across the country and forecasters are predicting heavy showers which will turn to sleet and even snow as the day progresses.

By Thursday, north Westmeath is among the midland counties expected to see snow on the ground, and frost and ice will also be prominent in other parts of the county.

It is set to turn even colder as the weekend approaches, with temperatures during the day struggling to reach as high as 3 degrees Celcius, with overnight reaching between -4 or -5. This outlook will remain into much of next week.
Motorists are asked to take care when driving, especially on rural and untreated roads.

The cold snap is set to be so severe that even the bookies are taking a punt on it! The odds on favourite is -4 degrees Celcius at 4/5, while odds of 5/2 are being offered if it plunges to -6 degrees by the end of the week.

There’s even an 8/1 shot that the mercury will drop to -8 degrees Celcius.

There is some solace however, as the bookies have offered a 250/1 shot of it breaking the lowest ever recorded temperature in Ireland by the end of the week, a arctic -19.2 degrees Celcius. What’s your money on?
