Housing Aid for Older Persons Schemes

The Housing Aid for Older Persons Schemes is for improving the living conditions of older people by carrying out minor repairs to main areas of an older person's home. In general, it is aimed at people 66 years of age and older. However, in cases of genuine hardship the local authority may assist people under age 66.

The type of work which will be grant-aided includes structural repairs or improvements, re-wiring, repair or replacement of windows and doors, the provision of water, sanitary services, heating, cleaning and painting.

For applications received on or after February 27, 2014, the maximum grant available under the Housing Aid for Older Persons Schemes is €8,000, which may cover 95% of the approved cost of works.

Grant Schemes

The Mobility Aids Grant Scheme provides grants for works designed to address mobility problems in the home, such as the purchase and installation of grab-rails, a level access shower, access ramps or a stair lift. It is primarily for older people, but people with a disability can also access the scheme. The grant is available to people with a maximum household income less than €30,000. The maximum grant available is €6,000 and may cover 100% of the cost of the work. Contact your local authority for more information.

Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a disability.

A housing Adaptation Grant is available where changes need to be made to a home, to make it suitable for a person with a physical, sensory of intellectual disability or mental health difficulty, to live in.

The grant can help you to make changes and adaptions to your home, for example making it wheelchair friendly, extending it to creat more space, adding ground floor bathroom or toilet or a stair lift. In some cases, the provision of heating can be included, but only under certain conditions.

Priorty will be given to people on medical grounds. If your household income is less than €30,000 you may qualify for a 95% of the cost of the works (up to the maximum grant available is €30,000). The proportion of the costs to be grant-aided will be tapered from 95% down to 30% depending on your income.
