Hopefully he'll be bringing it back to Mullingar on Sunday evening - Westmeath captain Ger Egan with the Delaney Cup.

Egans men enjoying proving everyone wrong

Leading Westmeath out in this Sunday's eagerly anticipated Leinster Senior Football Championship decider against Dublin is a “dream come true”, says captain Ger Egan.

Speaking on Midlands Radio, the Tyrrellspass clubman says that while Tom Cribbin's men are “in bonus territory” after their stunning second half comeback and victory in the semi-final against Meath, they are not going up to GAA headquarters to make up the numbers.

“Dublin are the best team in the country, everyone strives to be like them. We are just going to go up and play our style of football and hopefully on the day it will be good enough.”

Westmeath went into this year's championship on the back of a second successive relegation in the league. Egan says that while the previous 18 months were “awful”, the team were confident that they could turn things around.

“Lads had a good look at themselves after the league and a few harsh words were said but no one took offence. We just put the shoulder to the wheel and worked hard. We believed in ourselves.”

The Lakeside men will go into Sunday's game as rank outsiders, not that they mind playing the role of underdog, according to their captain.

“We have nothing to lose. We are proving everyone wrong. The lads are enjoyingn it and it's great to be part of it. We want it every year now.”
