Lowrys plug for the gar

“It’s one of the big events back home,” Clara man and top golfer Shane Lowry, who netted a cool $1.5m after his maiden PGA Tour win at the Bridgestone Invitational last weekend, told bewildered American reporters after his landmark victory.
He was talking about the Mullingar Scratch Cup, which was won by his younger brother Alan on Bank Holiday Monday.
“We’ve all won it, myself, Padraig [Harrington], Rory [McIlroy], [Paul] McGinley,” Lowry continued.
“It’s an amateur event. It’s one of the big amateur events back home that everyone plays in. So he won that last Monday when I was flying over so it was a good week for us.”
The American press pack looked bemused, but Lowry (left) was happy to help, sparking laughter all round.
“It’s called the Mullingar Scratch Cup. Did you get that? Mullingar. M-u-l-l-i-n-g-a-r. Need a translator, do we?”
What a legend!
