WEATHER WARNING: Storm Frank reaches its peak

Severe flooding on all routes is expected as storm Frank, currently reaching its peak, unleashes its fury.

Heavy downpours of up to 70mm are forecast and gale force winds 100-110kph are signalled in exposed areas of the midlands.

A spokesman for Westmeath County Council said the ground is already saturated and advised motorists to exercise extreme caution when driving, and to only travel if absolutely necessary.

Properties that are prone to flooding can contact the Council where sandbags will be made available to protect properties.

Disruption to power supplies may also be possible as the strong winds and rain continue throughout tonight and on into Wednesday.

The River Shannon in Athlone remains at a high level and it is expected that the river will rise by a further 8cm by Saturday January 2. Present indications are that the river will not reach the levels recorded in 2009.

On New Year’s Eve, Thursday, temperatures are set to drop dramatically. Wintery showers are predicted with the mercury falling below zero after midnight and strong southeasterly winds could spell the arrival of storm Gertrude.
