Canal path won't re-open soon

The section of canal path in the centre of Mullingar from the Carey Bridge to the rear of Coláiste Mhuire won’t be reopened to the public for at least two more months.
The canal path, or towpath, which is very popular with local joggers and walkers, was closed last month amid concerns about the structural stability of a section of the boundary wall at the rear of Coláiste Mhuire. Late last year a section of the wall collapsed and the area around it was cordoned off.
In a statement issued to the Westmeath Examiner, Waterways Ireland, which has responsibility for the upkeep of the path and its environs, said: “We are in the process of a structural survey and analysis and intend to commence repair works in mid March. It is envisaged the towpath will re-open in mid April.”
