The Ballymahon Road in Mullingar.

Speeding on the Ballymahon road

The council needs to review road safety on the Ballymahon Road, according to Cllr Ken Glynn.

The Fianna Fáil man says that “many residents” in the Carra Grove, Carra Vale, Grange South and Greenpark estates “struggle to exit on to the main road, given the excessive speeds along this road”.

While he acknowledged the council’s response that the estates are all within the 50kmh speed limit zone, Cllr Glynn said that the council and gardaí need to come up with “some answer for this very busy stretch of road”.

Traffic survey

The council has no plan to conduct a traffic count on the L1546 to Athboy, Cllr Frank McDermott was informed at the February meeting of Mullingar Municipal District.

The Fine Gael man wanted the council to add the road to its gritting schedule, as he says it’s a “long-standing access route” for people going to Athboy.

Describing himself as disappointed with the council’s response, he said that he would “dearly love” to see the road included for people living in the vicinity.

Cllr McDermott also asked the council to investigate the cause of “constant” flooding of lands at Balrath North, Delvin.

He was informed that the piped culvert is working at the area in question and that the drainage of private lands is not an issue for the MMD.
