Whelehans Pharmacys Lorraine Murphy: Preventing sun damage

Preventing sun damage
Prevention is better than cure, how often have we heard that saying. This is so true when it comes to preventing sun damage. Sunshine is good for us and makes us happier and feel better when we treat it with respect and take the proper precautions. The ultraviolet rays are what cause sunburn and so cause damage to the skin. Once the skin is sunburnt, even lightly, then the damage is done.

The sun is the biggest cause of skin ageing and also causes brown spots, uneven pigmentation, wrinkles and lines. Over exposure to sunlight can also cause certain types of skin cancers so it is vital to protect the skin at all times. The fairer the skin the greater the damage done by over exposure to sun.

We should all use sunscreen every day, even on the cloudiest day the harmful rays can penetrate through the ozone layer and cause harm. There are many excellent products on the market La Roche –Posay being one range. This range is suitable for sensitive skin and children also. The fairer the skin the greater the UV protection needed.

The first place to show signs of ageing is around the eyes so it is important to wear a good pair of sunglasses with UV protection. Drink plenty of water to help keep skin and body well hydrated. Do not stay out in the strong sun between 10.00am and 4.00pm as this is the most dangerous time. When out in the sun wear a wide brimmed hat to protect the head, face, ears and neck as these are very sensitive areas.

Apply sunscreen frequently to avoid sunburn and don’t stay long in the sun. Follow these guidelines and you can enjoy the sun safely and happily.
