Men's Sheds urged to apply for funding by end of August deadline

Westmeath Men’s Sheds are being encouraged to apply to a national funding pot of €500,000 to support their work.

This capital funding provides small grants to individual Men’s Sheds in order to enable them to purchase equipment or carry out minor works to improve their sheds.

As part of this measure, Minister Ring has made provision for almost €19,000 to be provided to the 13 Men’s Sheds in Westmeath, pending successful applications by the individual Men’s Sheds.

Deputy Peter Burke said: “Men’s Sheds are a worldwide movement which encourages men to talk about their feelings in order to improve mental health and wellbeing. Here in Westmeath they create a space where men can discuss health issues and emotions while engaging in purposeful activities.

“The sheds, in urban and rural areas, promote the health and wellbeing of members by combating issues such as loneliness and isolation, while creating a culture where men can discuss their thoughts and feelings without stigma.

“They are a great example of a positive community organisation that promotes good citizenship through good works.

“There are currently 13 Men’s Sheds in Westmeath, that I am aware of, and they are encouraged to apply for the funding of €18,841 allocated to Westmeath County Council.

“It is essential that the individual sheds apply, and applications will have to be made to the Westmeath Local Community Development Committee (LCDC) by August 31, 2018.”

Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring said: “I have decided to introduce this funding in recognition of the work Men’s Sheds do. It follows discussions with the Irish Men’s Shed Association. I have asked them to provide details to their members over the coming period on how to apply.

“I encourage all Men’s Sheds to avail of the support and I wish the Irish Men’s Shed Association every success as it grows and develops,” the minister said.
