The ice is broken on plans for WinterFest Mullingar

Mullingar Chamber of Commerce hosted the launch of Mullingar on Ice last week, and confirmed that an ice-skating rink that will be in located in Mullingar Town Park from November 26 until January 6.

The ice-skating rink will be part of WinterFest Mullingar.

WinterFest Mullingar is a community initiative developed by Mullingar Chamber hoping to bring the very best Mullingar has to offer under one umbrella branding. 

Speaking at the launch, chamber president, Tom Hyland, said: “We are very excited to launch WinterFest Mullingar and Mullingar on Ice for 2018. 

“We hope to bring 100,000 people to Mullingar over a six-week period, and expect the ice rink alone to welcome 40,000 skaters.” (Continues below image.)

Also at the launch, the deputy president of the chamber, Ian Kerr, said:  “WinterFest featuring Mullingar on Ice will be a positive addition to the landscape locally, hopefully generating €3 million in additional spending for our town. 

“Thirty temporary jobs will also be created.”

The Mullingar Christmas Market, which has been a successful event on Mount Street for a number of years, will move to Mullingar Town Park this December following successful events such as Picnic in the Park

Festival lead, John Keane, said: “This is the first time an ice rink has come to the midlands and it is important that the event is supported by our community. 

“We expect this to be a successful model and an annual event in Mullingar.

“Mullingar on Ice looks forward to hosting fundraisers for local sports and community groups along with work nights out in the run-up to Christmas. 

“Tickets will sell fast and for this reason we would encourage people to book their tickets from today on www.iceskating.ie.”

“We’re very excited to be bringing Ireland’s premier ice-skating experience to Mullingar,” said Bill Cremin from Cool Runnings Events, the company behind Mullingar on Ice.

Mr Hyland concluded: “This event would not have happened without the support of Westmeath County Council and our local sponsors who have already come on board. Mullingar Chamber would like to thank them for their continued support to date,”
