‘Big brothers’ and ‘big sisters’ sought by Foróige

The “Big Brother Big Sister” concept has been running in the midlands for many years – and it’s because it is so popular, that those behind the notion keep it going.

The idea is that young people aged from 10-18 are matched with someone who acts as a “big brother” or “big sister” to them, explains Carmel Naughton Programme Officer Big Brother Big Sister, Westmeath and Offaly.

The project is under the auspices of Foróíe.

“The idea is that the ‘big brother’ or ‘big sister’ supports the young person and acts as a role model. Sometimes a young person doesn’t have anyone outside their family circle who they can talk to,” she explains – stressing, however, that often the friendship acts more as an opportunity for a young person to follow a pursuit that they would otherwise not get the chance to learn, such as a hobby, sport or craft.

“Fishing is one that is very popular,” she says.

The way it works is that the volunteers are first interviewed and they are garda vetted before meeting up with the young person and their parents or guardians with Carmel on hand to facilitate matters.

If both parties feel they have something in common and would like to become friends they do so, and Carmel keeps in touch offering support.

Volunteers are matched based on common interests/hobbies and complementary personalities, and they are asked to share one to two hours a week with their little brother/sister.

“We do ask volunteers to give a commitment of a year,” she says, but adds that she has some “graduates” still in touch five years on.

There is no upper limit for the older person: “Our youngest is 18, and our oldest is 72,” says Carmel.

Most, however, tend to be in their twenties.

Recruitment for more big brothers/big sisters is underway.

“Becoming a big brother/sister is an enjoyable way to spend your time and have a positive impact in a young person’s life,” says Carmel.
