Even with signs warning of CCTV surveillance, the littering goes on, as this picture, taken at the bottle and clothes banks at St Colman’s NS shows.

Additional measures needed to curb illegal dumping at bring banks, says Cllr Davitt

The council should look at additional measures to deter illegal dumping at recycling banks, Cllr Aoife Davitt believes.

In a question submitted at the first meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad (MDMK), Cllr Davitt suggested that the local authority “evaluate” signage at bring banks.

She said that it is important that the areas around recycling facilities are kept clean and noted that bottle banks next to St Colman’s school in Mullingar regularly have refuse dumped at them. She also suggested that banks be moved to the nearby public car park as this would free up a number of parking spaces at the school.

Responding to Cllr Davitt’s question, MDMK stated: “The signage that was provided at recycling banks was done in conjunction with the Waste Enforcement Regional Lead Authorities (WERLA)in order to ensure consistency nationally at Bring Banks. Environment Department are reviewing options for additional, appropriate signage at these facilities with regard to illegal dumping.”

Cllr Davitt also enquired about the provision of “pedestrian lights” at Presentation School in Harbour Street, Mullingar.

She was informed that members approved €25,000 for a pelican crossing at the location as part of the 2019 estimates.

“Transportation are currently designing the crossing,” she was told.
