Intelligent traffic lights on the way for Mullingar

The new intelligent traffic light system in the centre of Mullingar should be operational by the end of next week, Westmeath County Council has said.

Both the traffic lights and pedestrian lights in the centre of Mullingar have been set to amber while technicians work on the new system.

Intelligent traffic management systems combine traditional lights with senors and artificial intelligence to regulate the flow and to respond to changes in traffic.

When the work is completed, the junctions at Pearce St / Castle Street and at Market Square will be full traffic lights with push button pedestrian lights, while Dominick Square will have a roundabout and push button pedestrian lights on Dominick Street and Mary Street.
