Westmeath ‘bottom of table’ for brown bins

Westmeath is bottom of the league when it comes to rolling out brown bins - used for compostable waste - it was revealed at the October meeting of Westmeath county council.

Large numbers of residents within Westmeath do not have a brown bin.

“What is the council going to do about it?” Cllr Vinny McCormack asked the council executive before going on to assert that the situation appears to be that service providers are not willing to collect brown bins.

Cllr Tom Farrell said that he understood the service providers were trying to see among themselves who could do it.

Martin Murray, director of services, said the council hoped to work with the service providers on this issue, but if that failed they would go the “enforcement route”.
