Shoot ‘N’ Stars Special Olympics Club welcome Uachtarán na hÉireann to Mullingar

President Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina Higgins were warmly welcomed to Mullingar by very excited athletes from the Shoot ‘N’ Stars Special Olympics Club on Tuesday of last week.

The local athletes put on a display of their talents in basketball, floorball, and bocce.

The distinguished guests both showed a keen interest and understanding of the athletes’ abilities, and chatted easily and informally with everyone.

Bob Keating, club chairperson, led President Higgins in introductions to the coaches, who, in turn, introduced the athletes at their activities.

All the volunteer coaches who attend training each week played a role in the evening.

Two athletes recited the Athlete’s Oath – Nial Quinn and Roisin Galvin.

Athletes Emily Jennings and David Corroon presented the president with a locally grown Irish holly bush, and Seán Keenan presented Mrs Higgins with a bouquet and a hug – which she warmly returned, to huge applause.

Then President Higgins unveiled a plaque in the hall of the St Mary’s Primary School gym commemorating the visit and 22 years of Shoot ‘N’ Stars special Olympics club in Mullingar.

He praised the work and dedication of volunteers in clubs all around Ireland.

The plaque reads:

Shoot ‘N’ Stars Special Olympics Club Celebrating the visit of Uachtarán na hÉireann Michael D Higgins commemorating 22 years of sport in St Mary’s.

Let me win but if I can’t Let me be brave in the attempt.

Club members, volunteers and guests celebrated with a big cake afterwards!
