Fundraiser by hurlers takes place tonight

Some of the biggest names in hurling will be put under the spotlight at a fundraising event in the Bloomfield House Hotel, Mullingar this Friday December 13 (tonight, 7.30pm).

Among those taking part in the event, a joint fundraiser in aid of the Irish Cancer Society and the Westmeath Hurlers Project, will be two former Waterford managers Derek McGrath and Michael Ryan, the latter, of course, also managed Westmeath with great distinction in recent years.

Also taking part on the night will be Galway and Kilkenny hurling legends Alan Kerins and Richie Power, the All-Ireland winning Westmeath camogie manager Johnny Greville and members of the panel, as well as the county’s new senior hurling manager Shane O’Brien and some of his charges.

The hurling talk, which will be done in a questions and answers format, will be interspersed with Christmas music from top artists. Will O’Callaghan, of Off The Ball and Midlands 103, will MC the event.

Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner recently, O’Brien said that he hoped that the event would be supported by local sports fans.

“We are hoping that not only hurling fans but the wider GAA community will row in behind it. It will be similar to the Late Late Show in that there will be a bit of music and some interesting figures answering questions.”
