Repairs and restoration work will be carried out to Market House next year.

In addition to internal and external work on one of Mullingar's landmark buildings, there are also plans to repair and repaint some of the timber work on the building's clock tower.

It was recently announced that the district has been allocated €35,000 in this year's round of funding from the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS).

The news was welcomed by the new mayor of the Mullingar Kinnegad Municipal District Cllr Bill Collentine at the recent monthly meeting.

Deputy Peter Burke also welcomed the allocation, saying that Market House is one of the most historically important buildings in the town.

“There will be restoration and essential repairs of the original Market House clocktower including removing rotten timber, scarfing, recommissioning of clock, paint removal, repainting, re-weathering and improving accessibility.

"The total grant is €35,000 and I know this will go a long way and further improve the look and the image of Mullingar,” he said.
