Local dog owners have been advised by Gardai to watch their pets carefully following a spate of suspected thefts around the country.

Animal and dog groups believe the suspected dog thefts are linked to a rise in demand for pets during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a statement released on social media, Westmeath Gardai said that while there have not been any reported disappearances or suspected thefts of animals locally, there appears to be a “worrying trend” nationally.

“Smaller dogs seem to be taken mostly. If possible get the dog chipped. If they are not in your company, make sure they are secured safely. Look out for neighbours dogs. Please don't post on social media about pups being born because thieves watch these types of posts. And above all, please report any suspicious activity/vehicles in your area. If you find any dogs in distress out of hours, please call us and we will get the relevant groups to help.”
