Unique Captains’ Drive-In at Mullingar Golf Club

On Saturday last, members of Mullingar Golf Club attended a rather unique Captains’ Drive-In at Mullingar Golf Club.

Normally held in mid-March, the original date for the traditional Drive-In was cancelled as a result of the Government-imposed Covid-19 restrictions

Determined not to let the virus derail plans for a drive-in, the four captains decided instead to mark the occasion of the start of their golf year by having a modified Drive-In on July 11.

Captains Siobhan Ruane and John Plunkett (pictured above) thanked all who turned up and their families for their support during this difficult year so far. Both captains also thanked the club staff for all their work in presenting the course and clubhouse in such fine conditions.

Flanked by family members and friends, the four captains, John, Siobhan and junior captains Lucas Kane and Niamh McGinley, drove off from the red tees, another first for Mullingar Golf club! Naturally all four shots split the fairway.

Meanwhile, it was a measure of the high esteem in which he is held that 185 members participated in the club Vice-Captain Paul McGann’s competition on Sunday, in what can only be described as testing conditions.

While the course held up very well it was the wind that was the biggest threat. Notwithstanding that, there was some great golf played as once again only one point separated the top scores.
