July stimulus should have measures for pubs – Flaherty

The July stimulus package expected this week should include specific measures for pubs, which have remained closed since early March, says Fianna Fáil TD for Longford Westmeath Joe Flaherty.

“Not one publican expected their business to be closed from early March to the end of July," he said.

"The unprecedented pandemic has seen many bars and pubs close their doors for good. Those who are preparing to open in August need support.

“There is much frustration in the industry as many prepared to reopen. The public health advice is necessary and it's important we all follow it, including the delay to phase four which is now set for August 10.

“However, in any stimulus package publicans should be acknowledged. The unprecedented closure and the sudden delay to their reopening date has change their industry like never before.

"The publicans have been hugely responsible, and they led by example from the outset. It is only right and proper that they should be dealt with fairly and equitably.

“I hope the government considers the challenges in the hospitality sector, in particular the future of pub and bar owners, as they prepare the stimulus package. Rural pubs are on a knife edge.

"Several locally will not re-open and this week’s July stimulus package should include specific measures for the pub trade and hospitality sector,” concluded Deputy Flaherty.
