Town bounce back from midweek defeat to top table

Mullingar Town are at the summit of Division 1 of the Combined Counties Football League after cruising to victory against Portlaoise side Towerhill Rovers at D’Alton Park today.

Top scorer Johnny Keegan was at the double again for Town as the hosts built up a 4-0 lead at the break, eventually winning 5-2 to move to the top of the division.

Keith Hope, Mark Connaughton and Jack Hall also found the net for the hosts as they ran out comfortable winners.

The win sees the resurgent Mullingar outfit bounce back after a midweek visit to Mountmellick United ended in a setback.

Town had Jason Charles sent off and conceded a penalty to trail by 1-0 at the break, and went 2-0 down not long after the restart.

Fola Ayorinde then converted a penalty for the battling visitors, but Mountmellick got the insurance goal they needed late on.

While Mountmellick’s win put them back in the running for honours, it didn't affect Town’s league position and today’s win saw the Mullingar men outjump Towerhill at the top of the table.
