Meteor shower peaks tonight so look to the skies!

The Perseid Meteor Shower lights up our night skies annually, and tonight and tomorrow night is your best chance to see them!

Astronomy Ireland is calling on the public to help count the number of meteors during what is guaranteed to be a magnificent show for stargazers.

You can fill out a form on its website.

No professional equipment is needed - just the naked eye and a dark part of the sky, away from street lights.

Speaking about the upcoming celestial event, David Moore says the Perseid Shower peaks early on Wednesday morning.

“And that means that, for Ireland at least, Tuesday night and Wednesday night are going to be almost the same.

“We should see about 20-times more shooting stars - or meteors to give them the correct name - than a normal night.

“So you might be hanging around for 10 minutes in the dark country sky to see one. You could be seeing two per minute tonight.”

The public are being asked to count how many they see in an hour, and relay the information to Astronomy Ireland.

The best time to see them is after 11pm tonight and the meteor shower will continue right throughout the night, and Wednesday night.
