Schools return this week and next

Following five and half months of a break from school, around one million children across the island are set to return to their respective alma maters both this week and next.

While principals and staff are taking all the precautions required under the new Covid-19 restrictions, students, parents and teachers alike will be feeling understandably anxious ahead of the upcoming school term.

For weeks now children have been separated from their peers, but once back in the classroom, will still have to keep their distance.

Face masks will also have to be worn at all times in the majority of schools as the Department of Education acknowledges that it is almost impossible to keep the recommended two meters distance within the classroom.

Sport, lunchtime activities and clubs, as well as school outings have also been put on hold for the moment.

There is also some confusion surrounding the guidelines, as in some schools bags are banned, but children still need to bring a packed lunch.

In this week's Westmeath Examiner, we talk to school principals in both primary and secondary schools locally to discuss what children can expect on their first day back, and precautions going forward.
